These "Dear America" diary books really “touch my heart”! This one is about 13 year old Kathleen Bowen who is growing up during World War II, and the suffrage movement.

She has two older sisters. Her mom is an active in the suffrage movement, her father is a doctor training other doctors to help overseas, her oldest sister is in college, and her other sister runs away to drive an ambulance in France.

Kat is really close to her cousin Alma, but Alma's dad sends Alma down to her grandma's old plantation. Unhappy with grandma’s ways, Alma runs away to be a volunteer nurse on the frontier.

Kat's mom is one of the women unfairly put in jail. They are held at an especially rough prison where they are beaten and fed stuff with worms in it. The women there hold a hunger strike, so they are force fed.

Cassie, her sister returns from college, and helps out at home. Even so, since she got a job Kathleen is left home alone a lot. But Kat makes some new friends and her dad agrees to take her to the hospital with him once a week. At the end her mom is released.

I really liked it. Though when I looked at the comments for this book I saw that someone thinks that the suffrage movement had absolutely nothing to do with the government giving women the rights to vote. Even though I know that that is just an opinion I think that that is outrageous and strongly disagree. Myself I think that no one could have been cold hearted enough to ignore all those brave women.

This book and other "Dear America" books are some of my favorite!

Уявімо країну, де живуть Король, двоє його підданих і машиніст, який не вважає себе підданим. Це – Недогадія, де мешкає машиніст Лукас.

Одного чудового дня в Недогадію приходить дивна посилка, в якій знаходять чорного малюка, і пані Штоцкер бере його до себе. Коли Джим, так назвали хлопчика, виростає, Король каже Лукасові, що острів затісний для п’ятьох людей і паротяжихи. Комусь – Лукасові, Джимові або Еммі (паротяжисі) – треба забиратися геть.

Лукас не міг покинути свою паротяжиху, тому вирішив, що вони з Еммою попливуть уночі, щоб не довідався Король. До них приєднався Джим Ѓудзик. Друзі потрапляють до Мандали – країни, жителі якої мудрі з пелюшок. Там їх зустрічає Фін Пон, маленький хлопчик, тридцять третій онук головного кухаря. З Мандали Джим Ѓудзик і машиніст Лукас вирушають на пошуки викраденої принцеси Лі Ши.

Невідомо, чи змогли б Лукас із Джимом самі вибратися з пустелі, якби не пан Бань, напіввелетень, а дістатися до Недоладії – драконового міста – їм допоміг напівдракон Непомук. У Драконовому місті вони перемагають пані Кутняк (до речі, саме їй була адресована посилка, у якій був Джим Ѓудзик). Спеціально для неї розбійники, які ховаються під іменем 13, викрадають дітей королів і вождів. Дракониха пані Кутняк нібито вчила дітлахів у школі, але насправді просто кричала на них і примушувала спати на кам’яних ліжках.

Машиніст Лукас і Джим Ѓудзик визволяють всіх дітей і разом пливуть до Мандали, де їх зустрічає імператор Пунь Джин і малюк Фін Пон, який став Головним бонзою.

Після того, як усіх дітей розсилають додому, імператор Мандали з донькою, машиніст Лукас і Джим Ѓудзик пливуть гуртом у Недогадію. Чому? Щоб провести заручини! Чиї? Лі Ши і Джима Ѓудзика.

У Недогадії на них чекають. І Король навіть визирає з вікна, хоча зазвичай цього не робить, бо зайнятий теревенями по телефону. Джим і Лукас залишаються, а Лі Ши з татом-імператором повертається назад до Мандали – поки не підросте, бо вони з Джимом ще діти.

До речі, як ви думаєте, що сталося з драконихою? Вона померла? Її відправили в зоопарк? Втопили? Ні, можу побитися об заклад, що ви не вгадали. Дракониха сказала, що, як усі дракони, яких перемагають, але не вбивають, вона стала доброю і мудрою. Але ці перетворення забирають багато сил, тому вона, змучена, надовго заснула.

А ще мені цікаво, як Джим Ѓудзик потрапив у лапи розбійників і хто його батьки? Хтозна, може, він – нащадок якогось африканського вождя?

Якщо ви коли-небудь захочете навідатися в казку, не йдіть туди самі, бо можете і не повернутися в Реальність. І будьте обережними зі своїми бажаннями, вони можуть здійснитися, але не так, як ви собі це уявляли. Так і трапилося з восьмирічною Марічкою.

Разом з друзями, Максимом, Денисом та Іринкою, Марічка будувала сніговий замок, а вночі замок покликав її. Коли вона ступила в казковий світ, її поніс на драконі Червоний Король. Та дівчинка не знала, хто то і які його наміри.

За нею у казковий світ вирушили її друзі. Вони мали порятувати Марічку й усі разом повернутися додому. Для цього Маріччина бабуся дала дітям амулет "скіфського сонця". Амулет розділено на три частини, щоб ніхто не міг повернутися поодинці.

Іринку майже зразу викрадають цигани. Денис і Макс, який перетворився на кота, потрапляють у полон до розбійників. Довгий шлях чекає на друзів, поки вони знову об'єднаються.

Іринка стає відомою танцюристкою і співачкою. Чоловіки упадають за нею. Усі хочуть хоч раз побачити виступ Променя Сонця, як її тепер називають.

З полону хлопців звільняє Пашко, батьків якого розбійники продали в рабство. Він і сам доневна був розбійником, бо не знав, хто зруйнував його сім'ю. Пашко веде Дениса і чорного кота Макса у Долину Каменів, бо там можна дізнатися відповіді на свої питання. У кожного з хлопців - своє питання. Пашко хоче дізнатися долю рідних, а хлопців цікавить, як знайти Марічку та Іринку і повернутися додому.

Тим часом Марічка дорослішає. Вона потрапила по той бік Реальності раніше за друзів, тому тепер старша за них, хоча була наймолодшою. Довгі роки вона провела у палаці Вогню, де вивчала вогненні науки. Та вона тікає від Червоного Короля, бо хоче знайти шлях додому. А шлях цей нелегкий.

Люди, яких вона зустрічає, нічого не чули про Київ і Маріччину рідну країну. Крім того, вони бояться їй допомагати, бо в неї є дракон, а дракони є тільки у Вищих.

Спочатку вона хоче попросити про допомогу Мороза і Зеленого Короля. Мороз не поспішає виконувати її прохання. Насправді він хитрує, бо хоче, щоб Марічка одружилася з його сином, Снігом. Сніг став її другом, але вона все таки прагне знайти дорогу додому. Тож вона втікає і звідси.

Зелений Король Марічці не відмовляє, та саме коли він починає її транспортувати, втручається Вогонь.

Тож вона повертається до палацу Червоного Короля. Там друзі її й знаходять. Та Вогонь Марічку відпускає аж після бою з Чорною Королевою. А сам засинає надовго.

Мене трохи не влаштовує кінець, але книжка – одна з моїх улюблених!

       This wonderful book is told by the four main characters Logan, Miles, Daisy, and Philip (not at the same time). This is a pretty long book, and so I am just briefly telling you about the book from each character’s point of view. Okay, maybe not so briefly. :) I'll start with Logan, then Miles, Daisy, and last Philip. But before I start here are two stories you might want to read.

When Logan was five and Life is Sweet still held the annual picnic and had tours, a boy came over with his dad (that boy was Philip) and so it happened that Philip (the boy) threw Logan a toy truck and Logan didn't catch it, so it landed in a vetch of (very hot) chocolate. Logan went in after it to get it. As he later explained for that one moment he forgot that it was very hot. That's how he got his scars. And that one moment made Philip very guilty.

One day Miles was out at the lake with his parents and he saw a swarm of bees go over to where a girl was sitting on the beach, the girl saw the bees and went into the water, and she never came out. She drowned.

Logan the Candymaker's son is finally old enough (12) to enter the annual candy contest. He was waiting for this for a long time! He is planning on submitting the Bubbletastic Chocorocet. It's supposed to turn from chocolate to gum and back again. Here's something about Logan, he was involved in an accident long ago, and has scars on his face and arms, but Logan doesn't seem to mind his scars. He and Miles become good friends. Later Miles even sleeps over and that's actually where adventures really begin...

The librarian at the public library said that this contest might help him get over it. In the car, on their way to the contest his mom warned him not to talk backwards to the other kids. When he got there he saw a girl sitting on the doorstep reading a book out loud. Which surprised him because his mom was always early so he always was the first kid there, especially at school. He had to wait about fifteen minutes in front of the school before some teacher or custodian came and unlocked it. So, he was surprised by the girl's presence, but he became even more surprised when she got up and started twirling. Then he introduced himself. Just then another boy arrived. He was in a suit and had a briefcase. When Miles started talking about the afterlife he started rolling his eyes. Then Logan came out of the factory.

Daisy is a spy. Her case right now is getting the Candymaker's secret ingredient. She has to enter the annual candy making contest to do that. And her "book" is actually something like Skype, but cooler. Daisy also has an earpiece so AJ, her handler can talk to her and she can talk to him when she is out of the boy's earshot. She also becomes Logan's friend and changes her case a little, she sabotages the ingredient. Or at least she tries to...

I'm not doing to write as much about Philip because you know everything, well almost. :) Philip's mom died when he was little. So he is growing up with his dad who is a sneaky businessman. Which is how he finds out that his dad has plans to take over the candy factory, and not in a very nice way! He also finds out that his mother told her dad to teach Philip about art, music, and love, but instead Philip's sneaky dad taught him about being sneaky, cheating on people, and winning every contest. So Philip's dad hired someone to steal the Candymaker's secret ingredient (can you guess who that is. :)) Philip understands what his dad's plans mean to Life is Sweet, so he decides to help Logan's family. He decides to steal the secret ingredient himself. By the way his dad said he won't try to take over the factory if Philip wins the contest.

On the day that Miles slept over Daisy and Philip were both trying to get to the secret ingredient. The boys were talking in the halls when they heard something. Then they flipped on the light and saw the people who they called friends. Philip told everybody about his dad's plan and Daisy explained about being a spy. Then they decided to help Philip win and save the factory. Even Logan agreed despite the dreams of winning the contest like his father and grandfather (founder of the candy factory). OK, I'll just make it short, Philip wins, and they become friends and candy makers.

B.T.W. (By The Way): when they heard Miles' story Daisy said that that girl was her and it was just part of her spy training. This made Miles extremely happy.

I hope that I have inspired you to read the book, and you better read it if you want to find out what the secret ingredient is!
