Для вас ім’я Ріка Ріордана може бути не дуже знайомим, бо українською його досі не переклали, але у моїй маленькій школі світ Ріордана швидко набирає популярності. І недивно. Світ наповнений міфологією, монстрами і богами. Рік пише так майстерно, що навіть найпроникливіший читач не зможе відрізнити, де сховані «нудні факти» про міфологію, які вчать у школі, а де працює фантазія автора. Ріордан сам колись працював учителем літератури та міфології, тож він знає, як робити навчання цікавим.

Книжка захоплює тільки тоді, коли є цікаві персонажі, а персонажі в Ріка Ріордана – на ура. Так само, як і з персонажами «Гаррі Поттера», ми можемо порівнювати себе з ними, бо, крім неймовірних пригод та магічних негараздів, у них такі самі проблеми, як і в інших дітей їхнього віку. У більшості напівкровних (дітей богів і людей) – синдром розсіяної уваги та дислексія, зате в них розвинені здібності на полі бою. Але в школі та буденному житті це їм аж ніяк не допомагає.

Я заходила на сайт Ріка Ріордана і знайшла там купу цікавих речей. Він дає багато підказок письменникам-початківцям, щодо розвитку персонажа, діалогів, планування сюжету. Зокрема,  Ріордан каже не боятися використовувати справжніх людей як моделей, але й не обмежуватися цими людьми. Також не обов’язково розповідати читачеві все, що вам відомо про героя. Якщо хочете ще – купу підказок та порад можна знайти тут.Що виокремлює Ріордана від інших авторів сучасної фантастики – це те, що він переводить з серії в серію своїх персонажів і продовжує писати про їхні пригоди. Одна серія-бестселер не зупинила його (так само хвалю Касандру Клер – авторку серії «Місто кісток»). Окрім того, Ріордан дописує на своєму сайті й у твіттері.

Дякую Ріку Ріордану за те, що він написав такі чудові книги з неймовірними персонажами і що не розчаровує своїх фанатів. Хочу ще! ;)

Review: (By the way, this review will be on all 7 books, not just the first one.) I thought that the series was amazing. The author used incredible details and descriptions, and she definitely developed the characters well. I think that this story will live on for generations to come. My favorite parts were the ones where Harry, Ron and Hermione were living a normal life at Hogwarts, not off being heroes. Also, "Harry Potter" is one of the biggest fandoms in the world, with clothes, blankets, stickers, jewelry and more coming out "Harry Potter themed". There are also many pages on social media sites and quizzes like " Which house are you in?". It was very interesting to enter that world after I read the books. To be in this world of magic would have been amazing, and I still wish that it would be possible today. Alas, it is not. I recommend this series to everybody in the world, young or old, and may the magic never leave you. The character that I can relate most with is Hermione. She is very smart, does well in school and always has her work done on time. She is always using her wits to pull Ron and Harry out of sticky situations. If there was magic in this world, I would be like that too. I thnk the author chose these title because each one has the name of the main character, Harry Potter and the event that happens to him and his friends in the book. They are good titles. There are many different covers for the books, but they all have something in common: magic. Whether it's Harry flying on a broom or a phoenix, it's something you most likely wouldn't see in real life. The covers are all fabulous. Read these books if you like magic, monsters and friendships. Go Hogwarts! Go Ravenclaw, Slytherin and Gryffindor(and Hufflepuff)!

Review: Its a really good book with plot twists and turns. I think that the story is really good and really well developed. The most interesting is how the characters took a road trip based on clues. I would really have liked to be in the story with the characters or visit the places where they went. I really like Margo because she is mysterious, likes sneaking off and running away and is well liked by the people at school, although she doesn't necessarily like them or trust them. "Paper towns" is mentioned a few times in the story, under different circumstances. One is when Margo says that everything in their town is made made of paper, isn't real. "Paper houses, paper people. It's a paper town." And when Quentin is looking for Margo he looks in towns that were suppose to be build, but never were, "paper towns". There are also more things in the book that imply that "Paper Towns", is a really good title. There are several different covers, one where there's a thumb tack in a map, like in the book, and one where Margo and Quentin are standing side by side and her hair is blowing in his face. And one where there is a city made of paper just standing there (once again implying that it's a "paper town". I like all of them. Overall the book the is very good and the author is an amazing one, and I very much recommend this book to almost anyone. 
"For some people, those strings just snap." Quentin doesn't want Margo to be one of those people (aha moment). 
"The town was paper but the memories were not."

Ця книга відрізняється від деяких популярних книжок тим, що в ній немає магії чи паранормальності. Хоча схожа тим, що дія відбувається у майбутньому. Не зовсім постапокаліптична, але можна так сказати. У світі, вигаданому Дешнером, краще розвинені технології, є таємна організація, яка стежить за головними героями, є секрет. А ще є дружба і любов.

У Лабіринті, зробленому з каміння, знаходиться Галявина. Уночі Лабіринт закривається і охороняє мешканців Галявини від механічних монстрів, які знаходяться в Лабіринті. А вдень стіни роз’їжджаються, ніби сміючись із хлопців, які не можуть розгадати його секрет.

Коли Томас з’являється на Галявині, ніхто не дивується. Щомісяця в ліфті приїжджає новий хлопець, і мешканці Галявини привчають його до їхнього способу життя. Усе з Томасовим приїздом ОК. Все нормально. Нічого дивного. Але наступного дня ліфт привозить дівчину. Вона каже, що все зміниться, і втрачає свідомість.

Життя хлопців, які живуть на Галявині, справді змінюється. Купол відкритий і не є перешкодою для опадів і вітру. Уночі стіни Лабіринту не зачиняються. Монстри вжалили їхнього лідера.

Томас хоче, щоб його призначили Бігуном. Це найелітніша професія. Бігуни досліджують Лабіринт і роблять карти. Чи зможе Томас завоювати довіру хлопців і розкрити таємницю Лабіринту? Треба зробити це вчасно, інакше настане кінець світу (хоча вони цього не знають).

«Бігун у лабіринті» – дуже популярна книжка серед моїх однолітків. Навесні ми якось обідали в китайському ресторанчику, і хлопець там читав «Бігуна…». Багато хто в школі прочитав цю книгу. Якось на уроці вільного читання Раян підійшов до мене з Кентоном і Хантером. Хлопці читали серію про «Бігуна…» (це трилогія). «О, то ви «Бігуна…» читаєте», – сказав Раян. На цю фразу повернулися майже всі голови в класі (бо він говорив досить голосно). «Я читав. Мені здається, ця серія ще краща за «Гаррі Поттера». Тоді ті, хто читав чи хоча б дивився про Гаррі Поттера, підійшли до нашого столу. Ніхто з Раяном не погодився.

«Бігун у Лабіринті» – цікава серія, але в ній немає такої сили, як у «Гаррі Поттера», – зазначив Кентон.

«Плюс, у Поттеріани більше перекладів», – сказав Хантер. «А ще є сайти, програми, додатки до книги, сторінки на твіттері, фейсбуці та інгстаграм», – додала я. «І вісім фільмів», – сказали Лукас і Коул.

Так що, як бачите, «Бігун в Лабіринті» – цікава книга, хоча, як вважаємо ми з однокласниками, до «Гаррі Поттера» не дотягує.

Chapter 4 Reflection

In chapter 4, Gary told about how he ran into a bear into his yarf and then threw a stick at it. We were to say if we think that Gary handled the situation well or  not.

I have mixed thoughts on how well Gary Paulsen handled the bear situation. On one hand, he shouldn't've thrown the stick at Scarface in the first place. After that, there really wasn't much he could do, so I guess he handled it well after that. He did the right thing, when he sat there, not movingm wating for the bear to make his choice. If he tried to wriggle free, or move at all, I think that the bear would think of that as an attempt to threaten him, and decide to kill Paulsen. So, there Gary did the right thing. Personally, (but this could be different for some people depending on their personal experience) I also believe that Gary made the right choice when he didn't shoot the bear. I could add my own thoughts here, but Paulsen describes it perfecectly when he says "Kill it for what? For not killing me?" He should be thankful to the bear, because it didn't kill him. Gray also says it when he says "I am no more and no less than any animal in the woods." I think that that's true. Not just for him, but for all of us. Thinking back to our last post, we are animals, after all.
Then we also had to point out five examples of imagery, one for each of the senses, from the chapter.
Imagery:
Touch: "I took the riffle from the gun rack."  Makes me think of cold metal and anger.
Taste:"I put their frozen meat blocks the edges to soften, then fed them warm meet." That makes me think of warm meet.
Feel: "I nearly froze." It makes me feel cold.
Smell:"The wolves could smell her fear."
Sight: "A cow in the field was a marvel and had to be investigated." It makes me think of cows and fields.

Чи вам коли-небудь хотілося потрапити у світ улюбленої книги? Я, наприклад, зачарована Поттеріаною. З того часу, як прочитала «Гаррі Поттера» (минулого літа), дуже сильно хочу потрапити у світ Джоан Ролінґ. Та, на жаль, у чарівні світи можна потрапити лише в книжках. Чи на щастя?..

Звичайні люди не можуть вчитувати себе в книжки чи вичитувати з улюблених історій героїв. А от для Мо і Меґі Фольхартів, яких створила Корнелія Функе, – це реальність.

Десять років тому Мо читав вголос книжку «Чорнильне серце» Феноліо. У той час, як він читав, зникли його дружина і два товсті коти, а замість них з’явилося троє чоловіків: Каприкорн, Баста і Вогнерукий. Мо вичитав їх із книги. І це погані новини, бо світ «Чорнильного серця» дуже відрізняється від нашого. Феї, кобольди, гіганти, скляні чоловічки, царі… І якби ж тільки це. Каприкорн – ватажок банди паліїв та убивць, а Баста – його улюбленець. На щастя, хоч Вогнерукий не поганий: він – усього лиш факір і заробляє на життя трюками з вогнем. У Чорнильному світі вогонь дружить з факіром.

Уся книжка «Чорнильне серце» (Корнелії Функе, не Феноліо) – про те, як Мо і Меґі борються з Каприкорном. Корнелія Функе, на відміну від Феноліо, написала не одну книгу про Чорнильний світ, а три. Я вже почала читати другу частину, яка називається «Чорнильна кров», і в ній Меґі з батьками потрапляють в книгу. Страшні пригоди не завжди закінчуються добре…

«Чорнильне серце» нагадало мені про іншу книжку, яку читала кілька років тому. Це – «Нескінченна історія» Міхаеля Енде. Там також є книга в книзі – з такою самою назвою («Нескінченна історія»). Атрею, так само, як і Мо, Меґі та Реза, потрапляє в історію, яку читає.

Мені здається, що «книга в книзі» – це гарна ідея, бо мені було б цікаво, якби це трапилося зі мною. А ще – це ніби ти читаєш кілька рівнів однієї книги.

          I don’t know what you’re thinking after you’ve read the title. Maybe you’ve read ahead and are already deciding whether to read this book or not. Well there are 4 books about Janie, so if you decide you know enough from this story, you can just read the 2^nd, 3^rd or 4^th books.

          This book and this series are focusing on an ordinary 15-year-old named Janie. She has flouncy, wild red hair. Janie has ordinary parents that might be just a little bit overprotective. She has no brothers or sisters. She has two best friend named Adele and Sarah-Charlotte. She also has a crush on the boy-next-door, Reeve Shields. As the book proceeds Janie will date Reeve.

          One ordinary day, Janie is sitting in the school cafeteria. Janie is lactose intolerant, which means she can’t have dairy products. But she sees a MISSING picture of a little 3-year-old girl with red hair and tight pigtails, in a pink and white polka dotted dress. She was stolen at a shopping center in New Jersey. Her name is Jennie Spring. Janie remembers that dress with the pink and white polka dots.

          Later she finds a box in the attic with the name Hannah on it. No one in her family is named Hannah. And in that box is the dress with the pink-and-white polka dots. So who’s Hannah and are her parents that she loved all her life (or maybe not), kidnappers?

          Her parents realize that she’s found something and tell her, Hannah was their daughter, but when she was 16, she left and joined a religious cult. She never came back to her parents, until one day she showed up hand-in-hand with a little girl in a polka-dot-dress. Hannah says that this is her daughter Janie. She says that she won’t be able to raise her well within the cult, so take her, enjoy her.

          But something still doesn’t add up. The milk carton says that she was STOLEN from New Jersey. So are her parents still lying? Janie has very mixed feelings.

Janie doesn’t share this with anybody but Reeve, her new boyfriend. So one day, in Reeve’s jeep, they decide to skip school. They go to New Jersey and find the Springs’ address. They see two tall redheaded boys walk in. Janie remembers baby twins. She doesn’t want to believe her own memories. How could her loving parents be kidnappers?

Later, they put the story together. Hannah was going home to take a break from the cult and stopped a New Jersey shopping center. She saw a 3-year-old girl in a pink-and-white-polka-dot-dress who seemed to be pouting. She gave her ice cream and then took her for a ride… That’s how she ended up taking Janie (A. K. A. Jennie Spring) to her parents, the Johnsons. She said that it was her own daughter, you can be better parents, enjoy her. Enjoy her, oh how they did! Raised her like their own girl, tried so hard not to make a mistake, like they feared they did with Hannah. And now – Janie is calling New Jersey.

          My library doesn’t have the second book, so I started reading the third one, and from it I understood, that Janie went to live with her real family in New Jersey, behaved like a brat, treating them like scum and then went back to the Johnson’s. Now THAT is bad. If your little girl has been missing for twelve years, you’ve been worrying about her for twelve years, and when she is found, when she finally comes back to you, she says that she likes her other family and her other life better. Now, how would you feel? I mean, I understand Janie’s position, but she could at least respect them. She could at least TRY to be a good daughter…
